Estimation-theoretic approach to dynamic range enhancement using multiple exposures

چکیده
We present a new approach for improving the effective dynamic range of cameras by using multiple photographs of the same scene taken with different exposure times. Using this method enables the photographer to accurately capture scenes that contain high dynamic range by using a device with low dynamic range, which allows the capture of scenes that have both very bright and very dark regions. We approach the problem from a probabilistic standpoint, distinguishing it from the other methods reported in the literature on photographic dynamic range improvement. A new method is proposed for determining the camera’s response function, which is an iterative procedure that need be done only once for a particular camera. With the response function known, high dynamic range images can be easily constructed by a weighted average of the input images. The particular form of weighting is controlled by the probabilistic formulation of the problem, and results in higher weight being assigned to pixels taken at longer exposure times. The advantages of this new weighting scheme are explained by comparison with other methods in the literature. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the utility of the algorithm. © 2003 SPIE and IS&T. [DOI: 10.1117/1.1557695]

An Information-theoretic Approach to Multi-exposure Fusion via Statistical Filtering Using Local Entropy
An adaptive and parameter-free image fusion method for multiple exposures of a static scene captured by a stationary camera is described. The notion of a statistical convolution operator is discussed and convolution by entropy is introduced. Images are fused by weighting pixels with the amount of information present in their local surroundings. The proposed fusion approach is solely based on no...
متن کاملConsidering chain to chain competition in forward and reverse logistics of a dynamic and integrated supply chain network design problem
In this paper, a bi-objective model is presented for dynamic and integrated network design of a new entrant competitive closed-loop supply chain. To consider dynamism and integration in the network design problem, multiple long-term periods are regarded during planning horizon, so that each long-term period includes several short-term periods. Furthermore, a chain to chain competition between t...
متن کاملGhost-free Image Using Blur and Noise Estimation
This paper presents an efficient image enhancement method by fusion of two different exposure images in low-light condition. We use two degraded images with different exposures: one is a long-exposure image that preserves the brightness but contains blur and the other is a short-exposure image that contains a lot of noise but preserves object boundaries. The weight map used for image fusion wit...
متن کاملBackground Estimation from Photographs with Application to Ghost Removal in High Dynamic Range Image Reconstruction
We address the problem of reconstructing a scene background from a set of photographs featuring several occluding objects. We assume that the photographs are obtained from the same view point and under similar illumination conditions. Our approach consists of defining the scene background as a labeling over the set of input exposures, then assigning each labeling a cost, and finally minimizing ...
متن کاملA Maximum A Posteriori Estimation Framework for Robust High Dynamic Range Video Synthesis
High dynamic range (HDR) image synthesis from multiple low dynamic range exposures continues to be actively researched. The extension to HDR video synthesis is a topic of significant current interest due to potential cost benefits. For HDR video, a stiff practical challenge presents itself in the form of accurate correspondence estimation of objects between video frames. In particular, loss of ...
